Client: APY

Weld travelled to Amata on the APY Lands in remote South Australia to document the Kulata Tjuta (Many Spears) Project, a multigenerational cultural maintenance initiative led by Senior Pitjantjatjara man, Frank Young. Involving over 200 Aṉangu men across three generations, the project centres on the teaching and practice of kulata (spear) making.

Weld created a documentary video, photography, social carousels and an article that captured both the artistry and the deep cultural significance of the work. The video was featured at the Art Gallery of NSW as part of the Biennale of Sydney.

“The world should understand how important our Tjukurpa [ancestral story, law] is to us. It is inherited from our ancestors and is passed onto our grandchildren and the next generations. We are proud to share our story. Our culture, our Tjukurpa, our manta [Country], our walytja [family] is our strength.”

— Frank Young
